When Harry Met Sally + Travel

When Harry met SallyWhen you think of iconic love stories you think Romeo and Juliet, Casablanca, Gone with the Wind but if you are a baby boomer, you think When Harry Met Sally.

Not your typical “chick flick,” When Harry Met Sally follows the lives and complicated friendship and courtship of two not so great college friends as they live and work in New York City.

Filming of When Harry Met Sally took place all over Manhattan including in one deli with a really great sandwich but we’ll save the best for last.

When Sally drops off Harry after their drive to New York, she leaves him at Washington Square Park. Washington Square Park is nestled in the West Village surrounded by the buildings of NYU. In the early 1800s, the park was used as a potters field and over 20,000 people still lay buried in the ground underneath.

Harry and Sally go on a non-date to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and one of the most famous scenes in the film takes place in the Temple of Dendur room whose floor to ceiling glass windows overlooks Central Park. The Temple was built in 15 B.C. and installed at the museum in 1978. The Sackler Gallery where it sits was built especially for the temple and is one of the most stunning rooms in the entire museum.

Never has a sandwich sounded so good as it did when Sally and Harry met for lunch at Katz’s Deli. A sign now swings over the spot where Meg Ryan’s infamously orgasmic sandwich is eaten in front of a riveted crowd including one woman who tells the waiter, “I’ll have what she’s having.” Katz’s Deli doesn’t actually have waiters but they do have sandwiches that are bound to curl your toes. Ordering is placed at the counter after receiving a ticket when you first walk in the door.
