Nollywood in New York

PieterHugoNollywood
Nigeria’s Nollywood scene is one of the most exciting movements in cinema today. With its renegade, DIY sensibility, the industry churns out movies by the thousands, making it one of the world’s biggest film industries.

The scene has remained mainly local, though. But this spring, New York will get a behind-the-scenes glimpse into Nollywood when South African photographer Pieter Hugo sets up shop at Yossi Milo Gallery from Feb. 25-April 10. The show features a collection of arresting photographs set up to look like famous scenes from Nollywood films, with actors dressed as vampires, gangster and other archetypal characters.
