The second annual New York Gallery Week kicks off tonight with a number of opening parties at galleries around Manhattan. Once more, NY Gallery Week is actually a long weekend in which 60 contemporary art galleries and not-for-profit spaces open their door for extended hours and free events like guided gallery tours by artists, curators and art historians, film screenings, performances, special artist receptions, book signings, and more. The neighborhoods with participating galleries include Chelsea, SoHo, the Lower East Side/Bowery, West Village, the Upper East Side, and 57th Street- like at the Pace Gallery which has De Kooning on display.
Other highlights include: a Chelsea gallery walking tour given by Whitney curator Carter Foster, a free screening of Marfa Voices (2010), a short documentary film by Rainer Judd at David Zwirner, both on Saturday, and a LES gallery walking tour given by Whitney curator Margot Norton on Sunday.
