That’s right, three of our favorite things in one of our favorite places—Wednesday night at Greenpoint’s WORD bookstore will play host to our ‘Russian Night’, a celebration of all things east of the iron curtain. First off, we’ll hear from our own Laurel Maury, the author of the “From Russia With Luxe” chapter of our well-recieved “FILM + TRAVEL: Europe” guidebook where she covers moviemaking in the former USSR from St. Petersberg to the Black Sea. Also appearing at Brooklyn’s forward-thinking bookstore will be Alina Simone—singer, songwriter, and author of the “Jailhouse Rock” chapter of our popular “MUSIC + TRAVEL: Worldwide” volume—explaining the odd charm of the Russian jail ballad, or “chanson”. Backing her up with a few of the heady songs himself will be Mike ‘Vivisector’ Antipow of Gulag Tunes. It’s a night of punk, Eastern tales, and, naturally, the vodka will flow.
