Spotlight On: Colette, Paris

 
For many of the fashion minded travelling to Paris there is one place that is a must as a first stop, Colette. This three level temple dedicated to fashion and design of all kinds, introduced a new way to shop when it opened its doors on the Right Bank in 1997. It’s equal parts boutique and art gallery—and undoubtedly the world’s premiere arbiter of cool.
 
The mother-daughter team of Colette Roussaux and Sarah Lerfel runs fashionable department store du jour, which features a carefully (and playfully) edited selection of the best in design from around the globe. Racks of clothing from cutting-edge labels Comme des Garçons and Maison Martin Margiela share the space with young, emerging and streetwear labels, plus an inspiring selection of books, music, magazines, limited-edition toys and even a water boutique featuring 100 different types of imported aqua. With a constantly rotating selection, a trip to Colette is guaranteed to surprise and introduce shoppers to a hot new designer they haven’t heard of yet—the store regularly partners with emerging designers for exhibitions and limited-edition pieces. Not only does a collaboration here offer instant international exposure, it’s the equivalent of an official stamp of fashion-world approval (that’s why we’re so pleased they carry City Style).
